TOURISM INVESTMENT

Investment in tourism developments demonstrates the confidence of both the public and private sector to develop the visitor economy in the North East. With responsibility for managing, directing and influencing investment in the visitor economy, the unit aims to ensure that best use is made of One NorthEast partner funds to deliver the North East England Tourism Strategy. A number of key projects are now in development as a result of Single Programme funding.

Great North Museum

This is £25,000,000 project, which includes £5,000,000 Single Programme funding. The project aims to refurbishment the Hancock Building based in Newcastle into a regional flagship Museum, which will transform the visitor experience. The museum is scheduled to open on 23 May 2009.

Saltholme International Nature Reserve

This is a £7,000,000 project, which includes £2,400,000 Single Programme funding. Managed by the RSPB, Europe's largest wildlife charity with over 1 million members, the project incorporates a Wild Bird Discovery Centre, which will be the largest in the UK. The centre opened in March 2009.

Tourism Investment Monitor

The Regional Tourism Team have developed the Regional Investment monitor in order to capture significant developments and the impact they will have on the region.

Information is gathered from as many sources as possible including Sub Regional Partners, local Tourism Officers, Planning Applications and any details found in local publications and newspapers.

Only developments that would make a significant impact on the regional tourism product, namely those with a value of more than £100,000 are included.

The two spreadsheets below contain the most up to date known tourism investment in the North East. The first sheet looks at those with a direct impact, i.e. will have an influence on visitors decision to visit the region while the second looks at those which will have an indirect impact, i.e. those that will not directly influence a visit but will enhance the visitors experience while in the region.
